Northwest Attractions

Many people think that going on holiday inevitably means heading to an airport and jetting out on a plane, but why go through all the hassle of baggage allowances, airport tax and security checks when there are so many fabulous holiday cottages UK wide?

Blackpool, for example, has been a popular UK holiday destination for many years, with family, friends, the old and the young enjoying the many sights and delights this well-loved seaside resort town has to offer. Yet whilst there is much to enjoy in Blackpool itself, one of the best things about this charming town is its proximity to lots of the UK`s loveliest hidden gems. Not only can you enjoy a day wandering down Blackpool's promenade or pier or riding the Big Dipper, but you can also get out and about and enjoy a daytrip to a local hidden treasure.

Port Sunlight Village is yet another of the UK`s hidden gems. Ideally located between Chester and Liverpool, this is a delightful little olde-worlde town that was originally built to house workers in a nearby soap factory. It is only in the last 20 years that this lovely little town has opened up to those outside the world of the soap factory and is a lovely place to stroll through beautifully maintained parks, enjoy a picnic, or even while away a couple of hours in the small museum. This is a great place to get away from the `life in the fast lane` feel of nearby cities.

Another lovely little town which makes for a great daytrip from Blackpool is Southport, which has been described as `England`s Classic Resort`. This seaside town manages to cleverly combine all the traditional charm of a Victorian resort with modern attractions to please every visitor, young or old. Here you can while away the hours exploring the golden sandy beaches, enjoy a gentle stroll through one of the town`s many parks and gardens, or even visit the British Lawnmower Museum! Culture vultures will enjoy taking in a show at the theatre, whilst thrill seekers will love an afternoon at the waterpark. This is also a town well known for its many excellent golf courses, so don`t forget your clubs!

Alternatively you could always delve into a little local history with a visit to Pendle Hill. Pendle Hill, nestled in the north east of Lancashire, is where the famous 17th century Pendle Witch Trials took place, a witch trial which saw 10 individuals being sentenced to death for the crime of witchcraft. These trials where unusual in that such a large number of so-called `witches` were tried and convicted all in the same summer - that of 1612 - as well as the fact that they are extremely well documented. As if that wasn`t enough, Pendle is also where George Fox experienced the vision that resulted in the founding of the Quaker movement and the home of a well-preserved Bronze Age burial site.

Other delightful day trips from Blackpool include a day exploring Clitheroe, a boat ride across Lake Windermere, shopping in Liverpool, or even getting back to nature at Marton Mere Bird Sanctuary. The possibilities are endless! So what are you waiting for?

All of these locations and attractions are quite close to Blackpool and make an interesting day out from the resort.
